Kenneth Horne

Post by Argonaut » Tue Mar 08, 2011 1:15 am

I'm sitting here feeling morose, my mate died yesterday, and listening to Radio 7 via BBCi. I often do this, listen to R7 that is, and keep seeing Round the Horne on the play-list. I used to listen to this but, haven't done for years. Tonight I caught the opening few minutes of one of the shows and immediately stuck it onto my favourites list, it still makes me laugh. No doubt one or two of the other wrinklies around here remember this.

Certainly do, and have been catching it (and Beyond Our Ken, now finished for the mo) again on BBC7, along with such as Ronnie Barker's Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead and Michael Bentine. Barker wasn't just a superb comic/character actor, he was also a brilliant comic writer, especially when playing with the subtle intricacies of the English language.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend Jack.

"Hello I'm Julian & this is my friend Sandy. "

Before you say "that's Kenneth Williams" - You'll remember it's from RtH.

Round the Horne never fails to make me giggle!

& completely agree with you about Ronnie B, Wicorman!

Yes, sorry about your loss, Argonaut.
The word play is one of the main reasons I like comedy like RtH.
For me, the most memorable line from Julian and Sandy was when they were supposed to be solicitors, and claimed they didn't take on civil cases because "we have an extensive criminal practice which takes up most of our time"! Remember that RtH was broadcast at a time when homosexuality was still illegal, so they were very daring for their day.

You need a laugh to get over these things. Sad to hear though.

The thing I love about Round The Horne, Beyond Our Ken, and for that matter The Navy Lark and The Goon Show, is how friendly they are - I miss the days of gentle humour - no swearing, no shouting, just amiable anarchy.

That's very true, Wulf. They also (something I always appreciate) loved English and made full use of its subtleties

That's why I get annoyed with some of the basic spelling mistakes that you see on various fora. Textese really gets my goat . If we allow the language to slip down to its lowest common denominator we will lose the ability to have subtle variations which give an entirely different meaning to whatever is written.
U can read about it the gr8 book wot i wrote.

I used to listen on Sunday lunchtime in the 60.s, radio entertainment at its best, others on board, included Betty Marsden, Hugh Paddick, Kenneth Williams and Bill Pertwee, Might have been others but cannot remember.

Farewell Kenneth and thanks for the laughs.

We gave my mate a good send-off yesterday. The crematorium was standing room only and another hundred or so left outside.
He was a Liverpool supporter and they turned off the life support just after the final whistle when they stuffed united 3-0.
