Music Heads Ups

Post by Hoop » Fri Feb 04, 2011 8:29 pm

Less than half an hour from posting this...
Peter Green 'Man of the World' documentary tonight on BBC4, at 9pm but also repeated a few hours later at 1.30am [Sat morn].
In both instances followed by a Fleetwood Mac 'history' doc, which may or may not feature a memorable early Green section.
Also at 11:30 tonight on BBC4 the Clapton/Winwood gig.

The Green doc is on [BBC4] again tonight at 11:40pm.

The Clapton/Winwood live gig prog was far less cliche ridden and pointless than I expected; Clapton's playing rising above the established rut, but perhaps I'm letting Clapton's previous Godhood [inc seminal historical significance re the Les Paul] colour my judgment these days.

Repeat of genuinely fascinating doc about 'cult' Canadian songsmith Ron Sexsmith on BBC4 tonight [Sunday, Mar 6] at 11:30pm.
Ever since his 1995 solo debut [prior to which he was a guitar shredder, apparently :? ] - I've dismissed him as being far too generically derivative, with too few truly memorable songs, but you have to respect his longlasting creativity and genuine integrity - and he's almost pathologically modest, in contrast to the disingenuous humility of, say, a Springsteen.
I hesitate to 'recommend' these kind of progs, but in this case, I do. :)

I did catch him on Songwriters Circle along with Graham Gouldman and Fran Healey and found it hard going. Also caught This is Jethro Tull, which I have seen before and in documentary terms is more than poor, just plain awful.

Ah, I was almost weeping tears of awe and joy just to see Gouldman playing his 60s classics, JT, even in that awkward, solo fashion. :)

This Weekend Heads Up: BBC New York Rock programme, early Sunday morning, BBC4, 2:05am - 3:05am.

As ever, usually feat great bands a few years after their heyday, but inc the full version of The Dolls' [pre-recorded backing track -lol] Jet Boy, but with Television from '78 playing live in the studio.
As I recall, there's also the dire Dictators version of 'Search and Destroy'; a real injusice, because their own material was fantastic.

Couple of Les Paul related thangs, both on Sky Arts [which I only recently discovered was now included in the bog standard Sky package].

Tomorrow, Thurs 29th, 11:30pm and Fri 30th, 3:00pm - a recent John Mayall and Clapton 'reunion' gig; though Clapton probably won't use a Les Paul as would be historically 'correct'.

Saturday, Oct 1st, 10:00pm - Jeff Beck playing a tribute gig to Les Paul: now Beck might have the decency to drag out a Paul, under the circumstances. 8-)

 Check this out - Soundboard Fiction, "Wash me in the water" (The Official Video). As someone once said "Now that's what I call music". :D
