1. Does the external drive spin up and how is it connected?
2. What operating system are you using?

Out of interest, is it a Seagate one?

Oh, sorry - does it make a whirring noise! If it does whir you stand a chance of recovering at least some of the data, because this means that the drive is mechanically functional.

When you plug in the drive to a USB port, does Win7 make the USB connect sound and do you see any drivers being installed / error messages about malfunctioning USB devices? Try plugging the drive into a different USB socket to trigger this.

There is no noise at all.It does make a sound when I plug it into and take it out of a USB port. There are no messages coming up about drivers being installed or any error messages.I have also tried other ports as well.

Ah. That's probably not good. That implies that the USB <> SATA / IDE controller works, but the drive might not.

Plug it in and then go in to Control Panel, open up Administrative Tools and then click on Disk Management. If your external drive is working at all, you should see it at the bottom of the list.

Unfortunately, manufacturers commonly use very shoddy quality hard drives in external caddies, so dead drives are not unusual.

Hmm. Back to first principles.

Odds are that it's dead, but there is an outside chance of a loose connector in the drive. Google the drive model and see if there is a disassembly video to show you how to get into the case. If you're lucky, there is a loose cable to pop back in. Alternatively it's all gone.

Actually, I've had another thought. Is this a USB powered hard drive - i.e. no external PSU? If so, are you using the cable is was supplied with? Some of the bigger drives are supplied with a USB 'Y' cable and they don't get enough power if you use a regular one.

Sadly, this is a relatively common problem. Would you believe that certain manufacturers are renowned for using less than stellar quality drives in their consumer USB 'backup' drives!
