Converting .wtv HD movies to another format

Post by Bic Basher » Fri Oct 12, 2012 5:19 pm

I record from Windows Media Center as it's the easiest way for me. With SD recordings, I can convert to DVR-MS, then to another format.

However with HD recordings, you can't do this and have to convert straight from .wtv with various results which lose picture quality using Freemake.

Any suggestions?

I think VideoRedo will do the job (Let me know if you want to give it a try)

MC-TV Converter - http://mctvconverter.vivolum.net/-" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; will remux wtv files into much nicer ts files, which you can then feed into most editors that support h264. It's free too.

VideoRedo will do both editing and conversion of wtv files.

The simplest thing is to cut out the wtv step all together. MediaPortal will save straight to ts. You might find it to be slightly overkill though.

Real life gets complicated at times, so I'm not capping much at the moment.

That worked great, I was able to play the file in MPC with the ts format without loss of frames or quality.

I was also able to convert the SD recordings into mpg also.

Cheers magnet.

It was all going so well, then as I tried to convert Saturday's HD LT to .ts, it kept crashing.

Do you have a strong signal? I find that signal problems can lead to recordings that won't edit properly.

Sometimes you can save a file by cutting a few minutes off the start or end, but that isn't exactly helpful. If you've tried VideoRedo, you'll find that sometimes the output progress will stall and you get the dreaded yellow warning triangle - same problem. Basically, h264 editors / parsers aren't anywhere near as advanced as the mpeg2 ones.

The HD mux is at 62% signal strength with the SD muxes at 100%. Videoredo handled the file with no problems whatsoever, so was able to post a set of Faye Barker this evening.

I'm recording The Thick of it on BBC HD later on, so will see what happens when I attempt to convert to .ts.

I did consider Media Portal, but it doesn't install on my system.

The Thick of it also crashed when attempting to convert, so that's another no-no.

Last ditch attempt with Microsoft Expression, which so far has been the worst product known to man.

Right, the only solution appears to be to use the supplied software with my HD dongle called TV Center which records in the .ts format which MC-TV Converter seems to like compared to Windows awful .wtv format.

I don't like the software, but if it means I can carry on capping HD without too much hassle, it's worth dumping Windows Media Center for.
