Sometimes the forum runs as fast as is possible, then its slow as f'ck, then I get errors.

Same here for me - I'm running an old 2002 vintage P4 laptop (1.6GHz/512 Meg RAM/16 Meg graphics/XP Pro/IE7), and the site is definitely a LOT quicker now than it was last week. It's either a coincidence, or there was something about the pre-crash site that was eating system resources at my end.

(Just ran a speed test on my connection, and getting an average of 3.5 Meg there, which is about normal for me...)

Id like to know, Lather, how you were getting on earlier, it was slow all afternoon/evening when busy, it may just be better now as its quiet. Its faster than a fast thing at the moment, even with the banner ads showing, they dont seem to slow it down at all but the new ad does quite a bit.

However, the new ad wasnt the cause of what was happening earlier as I had it blocked and it was still a 'mare

My experience is similar to gaz's: OK at the moment, but slower last night. Seems quicker now than before the problems

We will see how it goes till end of next week since everything seems to be down to minimum due to the holidays. If it goes on to bitch arround, I'll get in touch with the techs at the server room. But they are currently still busy doing maintainance

ah and I dont think that the new ad is responsable for the server speed (not solely at least) because every site I run on the server is slow when the forum is slow, even the server admin interface. So I guess it is somehow hardware related. But we will keep an eye on it.
It is important that we get a lot of feedback from you guys! please do write down when the server slows down or gives errors, so maybe we can find a pattern

Just done a test, looking at a few threads, and speed seems about the same as I normally got before the new ads and Xmas theme. While the theme was up, it did seem a bit slower, but that may have been a result of my older machine - It always struggles with graphics-rich sites and those running a lot of Flash or Java code. That's one reason why, for some sites where I know they hammer you with ads and pop-ups, I use Firefox with an ad-blocker, although I use IE with no blocker for here, so all of the ads run each time.

Looking at Windows Task Manager while loading threads does show CPU usage hitting 100% at times, with an average during loading of about 75-95% and Page File use at 700MB and above. So I guess that could indicate that my machine is struggling a bit to cope with all of the data.

That's an interesting point - I kept getting an annoying message from AVGfree that Firefox was using too much memory. That hasn't appeared today. I didn't associate it with this site specifically as I always have a half-dozen tabs open at once...

Its much better for me today, got the banner ads showing but not the other one. Its much more like how it was when we first got the VPS.

Its all over the place again today, slower than the old shared hosting. Hosts seem to have finished working on the servers, so they think its all rosey, it isnt.

Well Ive got the banner ads showing and everything is like it was when we first moved to the VPS, really quick. There is no delay from clicking on a link, to the page opening.

Ill report back later on how it is when things are busy.
