CRT Monitors
How long do they last? Ive had mine for about 12 years and its still got a good picture and doesnt play up at all. Ive seen on other forums that they say they are good for 4 years, but thats clearly crap.

Re: CRT Monitors
My mates got half a dozen sitting in his garage, all work perfectly. I think you're right about them just being replaced by more up to date stuff. Mines not even a good brand, it was some cheap Chinese brand that cost about 70 quid, when branded ones were going for about 120

I had a CRT which blew up after I sneezed!
However on a re-conditioned ViewSonic CRT which I got for a tenner and it works fine.

Re: CRT Monitors
I've got a couple of CBM 1081s knocking around that are close to thirty years old and still pop out a nice picture
There's also a Phillips CM8833 thats coming up to twenty-five which works as well as it ever did.

Re: CRT Monitors
I was having a discussion on another forum about PSU's and this guy was banging on about spending big money on one, Ive only ever paid good money for one once and it went pop in under a year, all the cheap ones that have come pre installed in the cases I have bought have lasted years. My pc is always on and I reckon that all the switching on and off causes more damage to a psu and wears it out quicker than leaving it on all the time.

Re: CRT Monitors
And wouldn't you know it!
Had a thirteen-month-pld PSU go BOOM!!! this AM taking out an i7-975 CPU, 16GB of RAM and the mobo as well
All hard and optical drives are OK though
Just spent a few hours restoring data to the backup machine so, apart from Office, I'm now good to go
I gotta say that I don't think hardware is as well made these days as it used to be :/

My mate has a 300 quid tft and he has a dead pixel, just one, right in the middle of the screen, completely ruins the picture!

Re: CRT Monitors
I see the Comodore 64 is coming back, exactly the same layout as before except with an Intel Atom cpu and nVidia graphics and more memory

Re: CRT Monitors
I had a Commodore +4 which was the crappiest piece of kit even known to man, going to the 64 was like upgrading from a Robin Reliant to a Rover Vanden Plus!gaztaylor wrote:They were great werent they?

They were not built to last, like Spectrum.

Re: CRT Monitors
I no longer have a CRT monitor, although I work in IT, and we're still collecting the odd one or two to be replaced.
However, I do have a 28" widescreen TV here at home... I got it free when a girl at work was replacing it with a modern telly of some kind. It was going to whoever had the smallest TV in the office - my old 20" CRT 'won'... Fortunately, I also keep tropical fish, so I had a spare stand sturdy enough to support the weight! Getting it from my car into the house and on the stand (on my own...) was fun though.
